Zcash, a cryptocurrency that offers optional privacy features, has partnered with Nym, a project that aims to protect user metadata from surveillance. The collaboration, funded by a US$150,000 grant from Zcash Community Grants, will integrate Nym's mixnet technology into the Zcash ecosystem, enhancing the privacy and security of Zcash transactions.
Zcash uses zero-knowledge proofs, a cryptographic technique that allows users to prove the validity of their transactions without revealing any sensitive information, such as the amount, sender, or receiver. Zcash also offers an auto-shielding feature, which automatically converts transparent transactions into shielded ones, making them more private and anonymous.
However, Zcash's privacy features do not cover the network layer, which is the level at which data is transmitted over the Internet. This means that the metadata of Zcash transactions, such as the IP address, time, and frequency, can still be exposed to third parties, such as internet service providers, crypto surveillance firms, or malicious actors. These parties can use this metadata to track, monitor, or de-anonymize Zcash users, compromising their privacy and security.
This is where Nym comes in. Nym is a project that aims to protect user metadata from surveillance by using a mixnet, a network of servers that mix and shuffle data packets before sending them to their destinations. A mixnet encrypts user data into uniform-sized packets and routes them through a random sequence of mix nodes, which add delays and dummy traffic to obscure the metadata patterns. This makes it extremely difficult for anyone to trace the origin, destination, or content of the data.
By integrating Nym's mixnet into the Zcash light client libraries, Zcash wallet developers will be able to optionally implement the mixnet's privacy features, adding an extra layer of protection to Zcash transactions. Users will be able to send and receive Zcash without revealing their metadata to anyone, enhancing their privacy and security.
The integration of Nym and Zcash is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, according to Nym's announcement. The project's team also stated that they are looking forward to working with the Zcash community and the Electric Coin Company, the development organization behind Zcash, to make Zcash more private and secure.
