Using Artificial Intelligence in the Indian Healthcare System in 2022

Artificial Intelligence is used in the Indian Healthcare System by diagnosing, identifying, and predicting diseases and their effects on the patient.

Artificial Intelligence is blooming in India. It is playing an extensive role in every aspect of human life. One such aspect is healthcare and the quality of life. Due to its advancement, the healthcare system is progressing day by day and so is the quality of life.  Artificial Intelligence is being rapidly used in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and therapeutics.

Artificial Intelligence in the healthcare system is being extensively used and improved in two major areas namely, prediction and identification. Prediction refers to the forecasting of a condition in a patient. The early detection of disease is possible through analyzing genetic data, diagnostic reports, and health records.  Identification is about understanding the present condition of a patient. For example, Artificial Intelligence is used to detect tumors in patients by running diagnostics and analyzing their genetic compositions along with their medical history. This is to ensure the presence of a tumor. And then through the process of diagnostics like CT scans, the tumor is identified as benign or malignant. Another area is prescriptive. This area of AI in the healthcare system not only detects and identifies the disease but also predicts the future of the disease. It also analyses the way a disease alters the body functions in a patient. It also suggests possible treatments for the disease, also helpful in clinical trials as well as research and development.

Machine Learning is also paving its way in the Healthcare systems of India. Healthcare as a sector employs millions but yet there is a shortage of healthcare service providers. This is because the patient-to-doctor ratio is quite large and it is very difficult to cater to such a huge population. There is a gap and this is where machine learning is essential. Machine learning collects data and unifies it and can also perform large calculations as needed. It automates manual tasks hence reducing time consumption. Machine learning also has powerful predictive capabilities. It can also offer personalization of healthcare and by using algorithms it can plan out treatment specific to each patient resulting in better outcomes. Robotics too can be very purposeful in the healthcare sector. It can assist surgeons in surgeries along with diagnostics and also provide remote healthcare and treatment systems.

Artificial Intelligence is useful in detecting cancer. Every year, 1 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in India. With the rise of cancer cases, India hardly has enough Oncopathologies whose numbers amount to only a few thousand.  Artificial Intelligence here has become a savior. With help of Artificial Intelligence solutions pathologists are making efficient and quality diagnoses. To work at optimal levels, AI solutions need a good quality pathology dataset. AI-based Radiomics are comprehensive quantification of tumor phenotypes by applying a large number of quantitative imaging features, which are also becoming popular.

Diagnosis of Tuberculosis is another area where AI is proving to be a boon.  Artificial Intelligence-based solutions are analyzing the vulnerability along with screening, diagnostics, and developing treatment plans for patients with Tuberculosis. Artificial Intelligence based solutions are also enabling decision support for the caregivers of the patients.

The next focus area is the early detection of Diabetes. Artificial Intelligence is used for the development of an algorithm to detect the symptoms and signs of diabetic retinopathy in diabetic patients and use the algorithm as a screening tool. This screening tool uses Artificial Intelligence in the primary care of the patients.

With the decrease in air quality, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Diagnosis (COPD) is on the rise. Artificial Intelligence is being used in three major ways. One, by developing Artificial Intelligence based early warning systems and specialized spirometers, patients can identify triggers, symptoms, and other insights related to COPD. Second, Artificial Intelligence Artificial Intelligence-aided inhaler-based medications are useful in delivering the drug in the correct method and the required dose. This is also helpful in tracking the patient's adherence to the medication regimes. Third, AI Artificial Intelligence aided high-resolution CT scans, X-rays, and lung imaging tools help in better understanding and visualization of structural and functional parameters of lungs.

Artificial Intelligence is also useful in the general well-being of individuals. Applications, devices Artificial Intelligence aided by AI is useful in tracking the body vitals, sleep routines, and activity levels. This in turn encourages people to opt for better health choices and promotes a healthier lifestyle. Such applications also improve the mental well-being of individuals. Applications for anxiety, sleep, and meditation are proving to be useful for the general population.
