US Workplaces Embrace ChatGPT, Firms Concerned About IP

US firms are worried that ChatGPT backed by OpenAI, could expose their intellectual property

An uproar has been created in the US workplace by ChatGPT, an AI chatbot that uses OpenAI's Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) language model. However, some businesses are worried that ChatGPT could be used to produce IP-protected content and strategy leaks.

This worry was sparked after learning the survey results, 22% of respondents to an online survey on AI conducted between July 11 and July 17 reported that their employers explicitly permitted such external tools, about 28% of respondents stated they often use ChatGPT at work. Around 10% of those surveyed claimed that their managers specifically forbade the use of external AI tools, while 25% were uncertain as to whether their employers allowed its application.

Employers and experts have expressed worry that the inputs and outputs of ChatGPT backed by OpenAI which could leak confidential data or intellectual property. For instance, if a user requests ChatGPT to create a business strategy or patent application, ChatGPT may unintentionally divulge trade secrets or private information to other users or third parties.

The ethical and societal ramifications of ChatGPT's technology have also drawn considerable criticism. They contend that by producing erroneous or misleading messages, ChatGPT could lead to misinformation, plagiarism, or deceit. They also caution about ChatGPT's potential to undermine human creativity, communication, and critical thinking abilities by substituting AI agents for human writers.

They have asked them to respect other people's intellectual property rights and to verify the correctness and originality of ChatGPT's outputs.
