Researchers have developed a new approach that can learn how to train itself and learn new things and outperform the current machine learning systems of drug discovery and design, which in turn could accelerate the search for new disease treatments. This method is called transformational ML or machine learning. It was developed by a team of scientists and researchers from the UK, Sweden, India, and the Netherlands. Through this method, the machines can learn from multiple problems and improve their performance.
In recent years, artificial intelligence has transformed medical research by revealing data patterns that can be used to predict new diseases and treatment outcomes for individual patients. TML can accelerate the identification and production of new drugs by improving the efficiency of the machine learning systems, which are used to identify them.
Generally, machine learning algorithms follow labeled examples, and these examples are almost always represented in the computer using innate features, like the color and shape of the object. The computer then creates general rules that relate to the features of these labels.
To develop TML, the researchers developed a system that learns information from previous problems that are encountered to efficiently learn the new problems. A classic ML system has to learn from scratch about a certain topic or an object, whereas, TML has a more powerful approach to machine learning.
The researchers have also experimented with the effectiveness of the idea on thousands of problems from across science to engineering. And they concluded that their discovery showed significant improvements in the area of drug discovery, where this technique speeds up the process by checking what other ML systems predict about a particular molecule. A typical ML system will search for drug molecules of a particular shape, but TML will use the connection of the drug to other drug discoveries.
