The European Union's antitrust chief mentioned on Friday that it will look into how Microsoft's deal with OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, affects competition in the rapidly expanding AI sector. However, the European Commission found out that the US$13 billion agreement did not indicate that Microsoft had gained full control over OpenAI.
“The key question was whether Microsoft had acquired control on a long-lasting basis over OpenAI. After a thorough review... we concluded that as such, it was not the case,” said EU competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager.
Instead, Vestager mentioned that the EU is requesting additional details from Microsoft regarding the deal between the two entities, aiming to assess if specific exclusivity agreements might adversely impact competition.
Microsoft has committed to giving OpenAI $10 billion in funding and cloud technology in January. The investment agreement stipulates that Microsoft will get 75% of OpenAI's earnings until it recovers its investment, after which it will acquire a 49% share in the ChatGPT developer.

During a conference, the Director of Energy Markets and External Relations, Andrei Kaktayev, at the Russian System Operator said that the crypto mining potential in Russia could reach 6.9 gigawatt (GW) as reported by news agency TASS.
Katayev mentioned that the most recent plan for the country's electric power systems, which was endorsed by the Ministry of Energy for the 2024-2029 period, anticipates an average increase in capacity of 2% annually, equating to 3.4 GW each year.
As industrial development in Russia is on the rise, this situation could potentially strain the power grid. Last year, industrial output in Russia saw a 3.5% increase.
The official pointed out that certain regions in Russia, particularly the southeastern area of Siberia, are still facing energy shortages.
He also mentioned that at the moment, these shortages prevent the connection of new large-scale users to the grid.
