The expert highly appreciates the marketing ploy of Pavel Durov (head of Telegram and founder of the TON blockchain). One of the main advantages of the TON blockchain is its extremely high throughput. In October 2023 Pavel Durov’s team set an unprecedented performance record of more than 100 thousand transactions per second. This allowed TON to surpass not only its competitors among other blockchain networks like Solana, but also such mastodons of the payment industry as Visa and Mastercard.
Such achievements, however, threaten to turn into big troubles for the Telegram community, as they call into question the monopoly of government regulators on financial services.
“Durov’s initiatives aimed at monetizing data within a smoothly operating ecosystem will allow Telegram to achieve new heights. However, it should be remembered that American legislation represented by regulatory authorities [SEC, CFTC - editor’s note] are already considering any such projects as their competitors today,” says Lado Okhotnikov.
The interview reveals the reasons forcing the American financial regulator to introduce increasingly stringent restrictions against promising projects like TON. Among these reasons are the weakened position of the dollar due to competition from the currencies of OPEC countries or due to the growing popularity of decentralized financial instruments such as Bitcoin or Web3 ecosystems.
