Apple, the global technology giant, has recently been accused by the publication, The Information, of having halted work on the next generation of its premium, Vision Pro headset. However, they are currently focusing on the development of a lower-priced version of the headset that may be launched by the end of 2025.

Several insiders briefed on Apple’s supply chain and production cuts shared with The Information that the firm recently informed at least one supplier about the cancelation of the Apple Vision Pro 2.

The news came after sales of the current US$3,500 Apple Vision Pro model of smart glasses, which was launched earlier this year, declined.

Initially, the company had envisioned the release of two configurations of the Vision headset—like with iPhones, wherein Apple produces both the standard and Pro models. However, over the last year, the company has been refocusing the product away from the high-end successor to the Vision Pro and has pulled people off the project to focus on decreasing the material costs of the first-generation accessory.

What to anticipate from Apple’s inexpensive mixed-reality headset

One of the two distinct displays unveiled at this year’s CES is the cheaper Vision headset, also known as N109, which is expected to have the same high-resolution screens as Apple Vision Pro together with a less complicated head strap, fewer cameras, and smaller speakers.

Apple is also planning to make the device at least one-third lighter than the Vision Pro, an idea which, in the opinion of many critics, would significantly improve the device’s design.

However, The Information notes that Apple has been significantly challenged to find strategies to manage its costs downward without giving up on quite a few essential functionalities. Apple has been sourcing cheaper displays from Chinese partner Seeya Technology, but the firm has not been able to provide the necessary quality Apple is looking for.

However, it appears the company is still invested in the Vision product line and the future of augmented and virtual reality technologies. A recent addition made by the company to the Apple Vision Pro cousins was the availability of the same in eight more countries, including China and Japan. Besides this, in its annual conference called the WWDC, the company gave a sneak peek into the things that would be incorporated into VisionOS 2.

Apart from this, when it comes to other developments from Apple, it recently announced that iOS 18 Beta 2 new features will be available to users starting Monday, 24th June.
