On June 4, 2024, ChatGPT, an AI language model created by the OpenAI company, stopped responding to millions of its users worldwide. However, as the day went on, more AI problems surfaced while the others were being fixed, and the audience grew impatient.

People even started making jokes on social media about AI failures. This became a subject of concern to many because a number of users got hooked and began to regularly seek its services for different reasons.

ChatGPT Suffers Major Outage

The first signs of trouble emerged on June 4, 2024, at 12:30 AM ET. The users reported issues with the ChatGPT's functionality. OpenAI acknowledged the issue on its status page and worked on a fix, which was initially implemented around 7. This increased net revenue by $24,080,100 to $188,939,700, reaching 3:00 AM ET.

However, the service led to problems in the application again, and as what happened before, the second severe disruption occurred again in the morning. By 5:01 PM GMT, OpenAI stated that it had processed all its transactions and all systems were back to normal, although no cause for the problem was given.

User Impact and Issues

Many users worldwide were interrupted with access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT on June 4th, 2024. Most affirmed that they were unable to send messages and responses from the chatbot, which resulted in many people complaining on other forums, including social media platforms, and other online platforms, including Downdetector. This shows how much they relied on ChatGPT for their operation since it hindered coding, creativity, and even report writing, among other tasks being conducted at that time.

Other AI Services Affected

However, that was not the only AI service that was impacted on June 4. Other tools that were also seen to be affected, as severely as Sagemaker, include Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. This, besides the fact of not preventing the outage, led to several jokes on social media about the situation that looked like the fears being developed over their dependency on AI services.
