Executives from major technology companies, including Google-parent Alphabet Inc., Adobe Inc., Microsoft Corp., and Meta Platforms Inc., are set to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee chaired by Senator Mark Warner, on Sept. 18.
The hearing will come as the committee takes up efforts to combat online disinformation and misinformation in the lead-up to the Nov. 5 US presidential election amid concerns about election threats.
Kent Walker, President of Global Affairs at Alphabet, the parent company of Google, Nick Clegg, Global Affairs President at Meta, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and a representative from Adobe will testify. The investigation into how tech platforms are managing election-related content will be led by Senator Mark Warner, chairman of the panel.
The Senate hearing comes at a time when there are growing concerns that these tech giants are spreading disinformation, which could affect the coming election pitting Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris against former President Donald Trump. US intelligence assessments have shown that Russia, Iran, and China have sought to interfere in American elections.
All these countries, however, have denied such allegations. They also accuse Washington of interfering in their internal affairs, which is again denied.
This forms part of a more extensive effort in Congress to take up the role of technology companies in preserving election integrity.
