As Musk noted in his post on X, formerly known as Twitter, his, next Starship (Musk’s Mars spacecraft) uncrewed launch is in time for the next Earth-Mars transfer window opening in 2026. "These will be uncrewed to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars," said Musk. If all goes well, SpaceX said it plans to send crewed missions within the next four years.
Musk expanded on how SpaceX's long-term plans for the colonization of Mars. He drew a picture wherein, after successful crewed missions, Starship would scale up its flight rate exponentially. "The goal is to build a self-sustaining city on Mars in about 20 years," he said.
Musk in April estimated that the first unmanned Starship could reach Mars as early as five years, with humans landing on the planet within seven years. The SpaceX Starship program has already seen significant milestones: Last June, a test mission by a Starship rocket completed a full trip around the globe. It withstood a hypersonic return from space and landed in the Indian Ocean after several previous attempts.
Starship is planned by SpaceX engineers to be a next-generation spacecraft that should take both people and cargo to both the moon and Mars. The ambition put forward by Musk to develop a large, reusable spacecraft plays an important role in the possible expansion of humanity beyond Earth. This company plans to fulfill moon missions before the end of this decade and then will shift its entire focus to Mars.
