Microsoft and Alphabet report quarterly results on Wednesday, with investors focused less on headline revenue and more on the cash cost of the AI race. Both companies are pouring billions into data centres, chips and cloud capacity to meet demand for artificial intelligence services.

The market wants proof that these investments will generate durable returns. Rising capital expenditure has already squeezed free cash flow at some hyperscalers, raising questions about how long companies can fund the buildout without straining balance sheets.

Microsoft Holds the Stronger Hand

Microsoft enters the results with greater investor confidence. Its shares have rallied since its previous earnings report showed the fastest cloud growth in four years, reinforcing the view that Azure can absorb heavy AI spending.

The company has also avoided issuing bonds to fund its AI expansion so far. Still, investors will examine Azure growth, capital expenditure guidance and margins. Microsoft has acknowledged that AI infrastructure investments and rising AI usage have weighed on gross margins, even as cloud efficiencies provide some offset.

The key issue is whether AI demand converts into profitable revenue at a pace that matches the spending. Strong cloud bookings alone may not satisfy investors if free cash flow weakens materially.

Alphabet Faces a Tougher Test

Alphabet carries a heavier burden going into the print. Its previous quarter showed capital expenditure of USD 44.9 billion, exceeding operating cash flow of USD 39.1 billion. That pushed free cash flow into negative territory for the first time since its 2004 listing.

The company lost ground since that report as investors reassessed the financial impact of its AI buildout. Google Cloud growth and its order backlog will be central to the narrative. Investors will also look for management to outline a credible timeline for returning to positive cash generation. Microsoft and Alphabet now must show that the AI boom is more than a spending cycle. Their results will signal whether Big Tech can sustain the buildout while protecting profitability and shareholder returns.
