Silicon Valley-based, Meta, formerly known as ‘Facebook’ has reportedly dismissed over two dozen Los Angeles employees who were accused of misusing US$25 meal credits. The news leaked exactly when the parent company announced that it would reorganize an entire level of management within WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs units.

Reports indicate that the dismissed employees spent their meal credits on wine glasses, detergents, and even acne pads. This move goes against the corporate policy whereby the former had strictly defined the use of meal credits to be purely for food and beverages.

Meta's Reactions

On his part, in a statement, Meta's spokesperson pointed out the company's commitment to ethics, stating, "We take these violations seriously and have taken appropriate action to uphold our standards," the spokesperson said.

Employee Reactions

The decision to lay off the employees ensued mixed sentiments within and outside the. Some employees were reportedly shocked by the severity of the punishment. Others defended Meta's position and emphasized the need to comply with company policy.

Industry analysts and observers have also had their say over the case. Some view this as the way Meta disciplines itself, literally imposing strict control, keeping everything "in check" through ethical conduct. For others, though, this is an overreaction on Meta's part and this will reflect upon the mood of the employees.

Context of Restructuring

Terminations begin even before Meta makes any official announcement about the reorganization of its WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs units. The company is said to be restructuring its functions to find more growth avenues and further efficiency.

There haven't been any official reports of specific cuts, however, the company is focusing on realigning the use of resources and strategic objectives. Thus, it wouldn’t be surprising if there were more tech layoffs by the company in the future.
