AWS and Verizon launched a customizable mobile edge computing infrastructure for enterprises

A study by Mordor Intelligence reveals that the Mobile Edge Computing market is expected to be worth USD 736.18 million by 2026 registering a CAGR of 26.4% during the forecast period 2021-26. The penetration of smartphones and other smart devices, increasing network-connected devices in use, the advent of 5G are all contributing to this huge growth. Cloud and edge computing is taking many industries by storm since it allows computing on different disruptive infrastructures.  

What is MEC?

Mobile Edge Computing is also known as Multi-Access Edge Computing. It is a type of edge computing that enables computing capabilities to take place at the edge of a network. The Multi-Access Edge Computing architecture pushes computation and storage closer to the end-user and individual local servers. Since it operates more closer to the consumers, MEC enables efficient and faster data transmission with low latency. Recently Verizon Business and Amazon Web Services joined hands to launch mobile edge computing for US Enterprise customers as part of their 5G collaboration. An on-premise edge computing infrastructure that can enable integration of Verizon’s Private 5G networks and AWS outposts. According to the ZDNet report, “ The mobile edge computing (MEC) offering offers unified connectivity, compute, and storage and is fully managed. Verizon’s Private 5G Edge platform will connect with AWS services, APIs, and tools on AWS Outposts.” By providing a secure networking and computing platform, this MEC facility will ensure wireless networking using 5G. In a blog post, AWS describes various use cases supported by private mobile edge computing infrastructure. Some of them are various events using AR or VR, live information overlays, etc., real-time diagnostics over 5G in healthcare, and educational institutions can provide greater accessibility to students from rural areas. These are only a few of the mobile edge computing applications. 5G Mobile Edge Computing will revolutionize the industries and enhance user experience in many ways.
