Wikipedia teamed up with Meta to automatically scan Wikipedia citations

Wikipedia is a unique fountain of free knowledge, but the world's most popular encyclopedia isn't always accurate. The Wikipedia foundation recently teamed up with Meta to improve Wikipedia's citations. Meta has confirmed to me that there is no financial arrangement in this deal. These references are used to corroborate crowdsourced information on the site, but they're often missing, incomplete, or inaccurate. Facebook parent Meta today announced a new tool called Sphere, which is used to automatically scan entries and identify when citations in its entries are strongly or weakly supported.

Meta to help Wikipedia counter misinformation:

The research team says it's the first model that can automatically scan hundreds of thousands of citations at once to check their accuracy. And they aim to turn their research into a comprehensive system. They plan to create a platform that Wikipedia editors can use to systematically spot and resolve citation issues.

Meta has also open-sourced the project, which could give external researchers new tools to develop their own AI language systems, the open-source library is larger and more intricate than any corpus ever used for such research. Which is currently based on 134 million public web pages. Because it's open-sourced, there may be an ability for the users to tweak those algorithms in ways better suited to their own needs.

Meta notes that to train the Sphere model, it created a new data set of 4 million Wikipedia citations, significantly more intricate than ever used for this sort of research. Meta has confirmed that it is not using Sphere or a version of it on its platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, which themselves have long grappled with misinformation and toxicity from bad actors. Their goal is to build a platform to help Wikipedia editors systematically spot citation issues and correct the content of the corresponding article.
