Matching up Scammers with Chatbots! That’s What this Dating App Does

It's essential to check your skills how good are you at spotting chatbots on dating apps?

It's been almost 10 years since swiping left became the move of choice for an infinite number of daters with the discovery of Tinder. Since the Tinder app first came into use on Sept. 12, 2012, it seems every single application has tried to figure out the best way for users to burn through potential dates at a pace that can set fire to the most well-intentioned thumbs. Despite it being a decade still, dating apps are struggling with dealing with , spam, and scam accounts.

Gizmodo has previously found that thousands of people were scammed through Tinder during the pandemic. Innocent folks looking for love reported getting scammed out of tens of thousands of dollars convinced to put down credit card info, or even being threatened after they didn't want to pay their fees. Tinder last year introduced ID verification to most of the app's global user base, but it remains voluntary for the majority of users. The prospect of being swindled on a dating app even got a worldwide premiere via the popular Netflix documentary The Tinder Swindler.

Chatbots and scammers are widespread on dating apps. It is very difficult to determine fake accounts as these accounts often seem more legit than not, having original pictures and other social media accounts. Scammers are even more strenuous since even when you knock off one predatory account, it's easy for them to come back onto the platform with an entirely different identity. "Ultimately, no one, whether they met on Tinder or not, should ever send money to someone they haven't met in person," Tinder stated to USA TODAY.
