Japan Warns ChatGPT Creator OpenAI Over Data Privacy

Japanese watchdog has warned OpenAI over data privacy. Earlier, ChatGPT was banned in Italy

ChatGPT, a human-like AI chatbot has been taking social media by storm over the past few days. OpenAI's ChatGPT Become Popular so that the whole internet keeps talking about the technology. It is based on artificial intelligence and can answer questions, talk in natural language, and does much more. The Artificial intelligence chatbot then got an upgrade when OpenAI announced GPT-4, which could handle even more complex tasks. However, some of you might not have noticed that ChatGPT, to serve you better, saves your conversations and can recall them as well.

Regulators around the world are scrambling to draw up rules governing the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), which can create text and images, the impact of which proponents compare to the arrival of the internet. OpenAI's privacy policy about the chatbot also states that the company 'collects personal information such as name, email address, and payment information when necessary for business purposes'…

In April this year, Italy became the first Western country to block the advanced chatbot ChatGPT. The Italian data protection authority said there were privacy concerns relating to the model, which was created by US start-up OpenAI and is backed by Microsoft. The regulator said it would ban and investigate OpenAI "with immediate effect".

According to a Reuters report, Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission has issued a warning to ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and has said that the company should 'minimize the sensitive data it collects for machine learning'. It further added that action might be taken if there are any further concerns.

The watchdog also added that there is a need to 'balance privacy concerns with potential benefits of generative AI'. The benefits include accelerating innovation and dealing with problems such as climate change. Moreover, as per analytics firm Similarweb, Japan is the third-largest source of traffic to OpenAI's website.
