Tech Monopoly in-fighting – Love to spot It. Google dropped many a sick burn on long-frenzy Apple during its Pixel fall event on Thursday, where the tech giant presented its Google Pixel 7 lineup and the long-waited Pixel Watch and teased the upcoming dockable Pixel tablet.
Google Pixel event was live-streamed with a hysterical sort of promotion, in which a group of musicians coordinated an impromptu virtual jam session with a little help from their Pixel phones, watches, and earbuds. As the hip quartet came together to make beautiful music on the same stage Google executives would show up on, it seems to appear another Apple event. Is Google "cool" now? As an individual sitting here with a Fitbit on the left wrist and a Pixel 6 on the right wrist, I am going to express my bias and say yeah, it's cool. As a person sitting here counting how Google just put in a "How are you fellow kids?" I have to say… probably not.
For many people, the Pixel 6 rocks, the Pixel Watch also appears as the winner and the Android 13 has a ton of ultimate features to get excited about. But the Pixel brand has still only captured 2% of the North American market in comparison to Apple which dominates 52% of the market with its iPhone.
Google threw a little light on the design choices of Apple, veritably subtweeting the iPhone's colors ("We don't just copy/paste one color we like across all of our products"), flat-edged design ("Your phone and watch are designed to be personal, to be touched and worn … And they have smooth, rounded surfaces so they always feel comfortable in your hand and on your wrist") and the Apple Watch's "prominent" external connectors what the Pixel Watch doesn't have, like a lot of watches do.
