The increased focus on generative AI in 2024 has brought light to other kinds of AI. About 50% of the firms represented by respondents have reported on their practice of AI for the past six years. In this latest survey, the world adoption rate was recorded at 72 percent this year.
The survey conducted in 2023 says that no area attained 66 percent AI usage, but in the current year, over two-thirds of the respondents from almost all regions opine that their enterprise uses AI.
In terms of sectors observing the number of organizations that have embraced a particular type of technology, professional services stand out for having the highest relative increase in the total number of firms adopting a certain kind of technology.

The survey indicates that Generative AI adoption is most prevalent in the functions for which its contribution can be maximal. In the current period, most respondents affirm that their organizations and themselves, as individuals, are employing Gen AI.
The survey reveals that self-ranking increases to 65%, saying that their organizations are currently using Gen AI on a recurring basis for at least one business function, a sharp rise from only one-third in the previous year.
At present, the average organization using Gen AI is within two functions: marketing and sales and product and service development. These are two functions identified by earlier studies showing that general AI adoption holds the most value in functions like IT.
Overall, marketing and sales stand out as the industry that reported the highest increase in adoption from 2023, with adoption rates more than doubling. Although spread across a range of functions, only two use cases—and both are within marketing and sales—are cited by 15 percent or more of respondents.
Across all the regions, the 'State of Generative AI in 2024' survey discovered an increase in the use of artificial intelligence generated in Asia-Pacific and Greater China. Also, top senior managers experienced greater growth in employing AI in the workplace or for personal issues compared to those of mid-level managers.
Respondents who are employees of energy and materials industries and those of professional services have indicated the highest surge in general AI usage. The latest survey highlights budget allocation by different sectors for general AI.
According to responses, organizations invest the same percentage of their digital budgets at above 5% into so-called gen AI and non-generative, analytical artificial intelligence solutions in numerous sectors.
However, respondents in larger industries tend to indicate that their companies use more money in analytical AI — 20%- above than Generic AI. On the other hand, a good number of people — 67%— are of the opinion that AI is an investment that will see their organizations put more money into it in the next three years.
