For the past decade, Facebook has earned its reputation to be the social media king. The past couple of years has been quite drastic for the Meta-owned Facebook, as users continue to turn their backs on the network. Experts believe that the real reason behind it is the growing regulatory concerns. And while you might think that deleting the account altogether will be the right move, the company will continue to have your personal information, which is why years-long active Facebook users are ditching the service at an alarming rate. Recent applications claim that Instagram reels might be the next stop that will fall under the privacy-hindering radar.
Privacy is a major concern for social media users. Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram executives have been working hard to prove to their users that the platforms constantly upgrade their security and privacy measures with the evolving nature of security breaches. Unfortunately, tech experts and social media users are losing their hopes around these platforms. Survey claims that the Meta-controlled platform Instagram is capable of tracking its users' actions, text choices, and even text input, such as passwords and confidential credit card information.
With the help of a custom-built browser, WebKit, both Instagram and Facebook inject a JavaScript code named 'Meta Pixel'. Through the code, Meta has demonstrated its freedom to track users' interactions without their consent. This will allow the platforms to monitor everything happening on external websites without the users' consent. Currently, Meta claims that the code is only designed to track visitor activity on the users' website to monitor all events which are important to them, and there is basically no proof that the platform has gathered the user data.
Securing sensitive data on social media is important since it minimized the chances of cybersecurity and attacks. Before creating any further accounts on social media platforms, users must be extremely careful in treading the dangerous online world.
