By leveraging IoT, the musicians and producers are provided with a unique opportunity to perform live remotely

Internet-of Things is the new technology driving digital transformation across the globe. Over the past few years, it is utilized both as a service and commodity. The Internet of things consists of sensors/devices which transmits data to the cloud, where the data is processed in software. Once the software generates a command to perform an action, an alert is automatically sent to the device via sensors, and without any human intervention.

Due to its robust arrangement, it connects various devices at the same time, thus accumulating and generating huge data. Moreover, since the nascent technology ensures advanced data processing it is being utilized in several domains of the industry. One industry which holds a promising outlook for this nascent technology is music and production industry.

Music is an entity whose stature in human life is non-staggering. Music deeply connects with human emotions. This unwavering affection for music ensues constant development of advanced music notes, lyrics and instrumentation. The music industry also compiles songwriting, selection and performance of different instruments, song editing and song mixing amongst others. For having the desired effect, every musical note requires accuracy and precision.

Music production is a team task and is usually carried out in a production room. This is the normal view that humans recognize. But what if musicians across different continents or locations produce songs and music remotely and live? What if our idea of music gets advanced and we can hear a compilation of notes from the diverse location? Seems interesting, right? This is possible through the Internet of Things.

This article focuses on how IoT is driving innovation in music and production industry.

Remote Performance

Remote Performance is the new highly effective process in the music industry which is enabled due to IoT. Through this, the musicians and performers can collaborate for a live performance from different locations. For example, if one band located in New York is performing through keyboards, the sensors installed in the keyboard will collect the data and transmit it to the cloud. Once this data gets processed by the software, it gets transferred to the other band located in Switzerland. With the help of data, the other band can generate music and perform in alignment with the former band.

Rhythmic Vibration

An actuator is a mechanism for turning energy into motion. By installing the actuators over the attire and sensors across the entire hall where the concert is taking place, humans can not only listen to the music but can also feel the intensity of the music. The data regarding the intensity of the music will be transmitted from sensors to actuators through the cloud, which will send vibrations of music across the users' body. In this manner, the actual meaning of absorbing the music will be experienced. Additionally, this type of IoT utilization makes music enjoyable for deaf people.

Remote Recording

Just like IoT promises a positive use case in remote performance, similar can be anticipated through remote recording. Through the video conference and with software, the producers can record music using bands. Data generated through the sensors enabled instruments will get transferred to the producer sitting at a different location. This process allows collaborative production of music, without the necessity to be at the same location. Moreover, IoT also allows recording the music without any human intervention.

Outlook

Owing to the COVID 19, IoT presents an exponential opportunity for the music and the production industry. With the social distancing norm being paramount, it is certainly not possible to conduct music festivals and live shows with the huge public. However, IoT provides a unique opportunity to connect musicians, performers and listeners, remotely.
