An in-depth investigation and evaluation of OpenAI's from GPT-3 to GPT-4

The Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) is a machine-learning model that may be used for NLP applications. To generate content that sounds genuine and is well-structured, these models have already been pre-trained on vast amounts of material, including books and webpages.

Defined, GPTs are computer programs that can create text that seems and reads as though a person wrote it but was not intended to do so. As a result, they may be shaped to fit the needs of NLP applications like question-answering, translation, and text summarization. GPTs significantly advance natural language processing because they allow machines to interpret and produce language with unmatched fluency and precision.

2018 saw the release of GPT-1 by OpenAI, the first language model based on the Transformer architecture. Even the most sophisticated language models of the time couldn't compare to their 117 million parameters. One of the numerous talents of GPT-1 was the ability to generate natural, understandable speech in response to a cue or context. The model was trained using the BookCorpus dataset, a collection of more than 11,000 books on diverse themes, and the Common Crawl dataset, a sizable dataset of web pages comprising billions of words. With the use of these many datasets, GPT-1 was able to improve its language modeling abilities.

GPT-2 was released by OpenAI in 2019 to succeed GPT-1. With 1.5 billion parameters, it was a lot bigger than GPT-1. A more extensive and diversified dataset was used to train the model by combining Common Crawl with WebText. One of GPT-2's strengths was its ability to create convincing and logical text sequences. Its capacity to replicate human behavior makes it a valuable tool for various natural language processing tasks, like content creation and translation. GPT-2 does, however, have several disadvantages. It required much effort to comprehend complex logic and context. Despite doing better on shorter pieces, GPT-2 needs help keeping longer ones cohesive and in context.

Natural language processing models saw exponential growth after the publication of GPT-3 in 2020. With 175 billion parameters, GPT-3 is 100 times larger than GPT-1 and more than ten times larger than GPT-2. Wikipedia, BookCorpus, and Common Crawl are just a few sources utilized to train GPT-3. With only a little training data, GPT-3 can perform well on various NLP tasks using about a trillion words across datasets.

The ability of GPT-3 to write meaningful language, program, and produce art is a significant improvement over preceding versions. Unlike its forerunners, GPT-3 can understand a text's context and provide pertinent replies. A few applications that benefit from the ability to produce natural text are chatbots, creating unique content, and language translation. Given the capabilities of GPT-3, worries about the moral ramifications and potential abuse of such strong language models were also brought up. Many experts are worried that the model may be misused to produce hazardous stuff like malware, phishing emails, and hoaxes. ChatGPT has been used by criminals to create malware.

On March 14, 2023, the fourth generation GPT was made available. Compared to the GPT-3, which was also groundbreaking, it is a vast advance. Even though the model's architecture and training set have yet to be made public, it is evident that it significantly outperforms GPT-3 and fixes several of its flaws. GPT-4 is available to ChatGPT Plus customers at no additional cost for a short time. Another choice is to sign up for the GPT-4 API waitlist; however, it can take some time before you are granted access. But the fastest access point for GPT-4 is Microsoft Bing Chat. Participation is free, and there is no waiting list. One distinguishing feature of the GPT-4 is its adaptability to various operating environments. As a result, the model may use images as input and treat them similarly to text prompts.

OpenAI pledges to upgrade its models regularly. Some versions, like the GPT-3.5-turbo, have lately received regular upgrades. To facilitate developers that want stability, the older version of a model is supported for at least three months after a new version is launched. Due to its large model library, frequent updates, and focus on data safety, OpenAI is a flexible platform. A model that can recognize sensitive data, translate audio into text, and produce natural language is provided by OpenAI.
