ChatGPT is Making Waves! Can it be the Touchstone of AGI?

Speculations are rife that ChatGPT can render humans obsolete for its acute capability of enhancing productivity

When Sam Altman, OpenAI co-founder and CEO says ChatGPT is going to become a boring toy, he means the possibilities are beyond our current knowledge. All thanks to artificial general intelligence, its stupendous capabilities in diverse fields have evoked hope and caution in equal amounts. While there is a debate if artificial general intelligence is possible at all, chatGPT stands as a touchstone for what AGI should resemble. Artificial General Intelligence is a generic term encompassing a variety of discrete features to take artificial intelligence close to human intelligence. This very fact is making the chatGPT chatbot create a steady buzz in the tech community and in the general public as well.

Just after 5 days, it was made public millions have flocked to the website to give it a try literally causing a crash. Google was in panic mode so much so that it declared code red reportedly for revamping all of its AI apps. No wonder, its novelty and entertainment value, all by demonstrating a peculiar human-like capability for responding to queries is what draws crowds. Its been almost six years since the first chatbot technology was introduced but for the progress, it has made it should be said it has been a slow burn. Most chatbots can be classified as primary, with the capability of answering rudimentary questions, meant to resolve front-office queries. Natural Language Processing has taken a new twist with chatGPT for it can answer multiple queries, sometimes vague and esoteric ones. ChatGPT is writing poetry, teaching notes, and code snippets and detecting bugs. It understands human language in its real sense to detect the context and respond accordingly instead of using keyword match. It can achieve this feat because it uses a combination of advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence to understand the intent. "The dialogue format makes it possible for ChatGPT to answer follow-up questions, admit its mistakes, challenge incorrect premises, and reject inappropriate requests," OpenAI says in its blog post.

This brings us to the question if ChatGPT represents the yet-to-achieve artificial general intelligence. Speculations are rife that ChatGPT can render humans obsolete for many professions for its acute capability of enhancing productivity greatly by performing tasks of multiple people at once field open-ended and complex questions and generating appropriate answers 'most of the times'. This lacuna puts this chatbot is attracting so much criticism. However, going by its performance it is pretty much sure that it is not an overrated application. As Sam Altman says, it can get closer to the AGI with some 'scary moments' and 'significant disruptions' that are yet to come perhaps it would someday get closer to general artificial intelligence.
