Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, has once again promised to raise the character limit on the network to remove the "micro" from microblogging. This time, a rise of 280 to 4000, or more tha
n 14 times the present limit, is suggested.
Over the weekend, Musk delivered this most recent piece of information about his ambitions for Twitter via his account. Musk replied with just three characters, "Yes," to a question on Twitter asking whether it was "real that Twitter is poised to expand the characters from 280 to 4000."
The billionaire has already declared that Twitter will boost its character limit. Musk tweeted last November in response to a question of a similar nature that increasing Twitter's character limit was "on the to-do [sic] list." This was in contrast to the more recently suggested limitation of 4000 characters, which was 1000 characters.
Whatever the precise figure, it appears that Twitter will soon have a large boost in available characters.
Although Musk undoubtedly isn't giving increasing Twitter's character limit his top priority, there is no indication of when it may happen. Since the new CEO stepped aboard, Twitter has been openly suffering, with hurriedly added new features and massive layoffs creating enormous upheaval. Musk allegedly threatened to sue Twitter workers who spoke to the media over the weekend.
Under former CEO Jack Dorsey, Twitter had already doubled its character limit from 140 to 280 in 2017. As Twitter transmitted postings from accounts you followed as text messages at the time, the original 140-character restriction had been predicated on the 160-character limit for SMS at the time. With the introduction of smartphones, this became less and less important, and in most countries, Twitter ended its SMS service in 2020.
Though many people were first skeptical of Twitter's move to 280 characters, users soon adapted to the new standard. However, increasing the character limit on Twitter by 14 is a far cry from doubling it and would fundamentally alter the platform's function as a microblogging one. However, based on his recent behavior, it doesn't appear like Musk is at all worried about maintaining Twitter as we previously knew it.
