Using GPT-3, Calamity AI developed a short film script called Date Night. GPT-3 is the third generation Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is a neural network ML model trained using internet data to generate any type of text. GPT-3 has been used to create articles, poetry, stories, news reports, and dialogue using just a small amount of input text that can be used to produce large amounts of quality content. Developed by OpenAI, it requires a small amount of input text to generate large volumes of relevant and sophisticated machine-generated text.
Enter Calamity AI, a pair of film students in California collaborating with an AI to write original short films and produce for YouTube. It aims to showcase the results of AI and humans working in tandem. The limitations of artificial intelligence restrict it from doing every element of the filmmaking process. These human sell-outs call themselves Calamity AI, and their latest work is Date Night, one of a series of films made in unholy collaboration between AI script writers and living performers.
In the short film tired of off-kilter AI like Cleverbot, they wanted to use more robust tech in their work. In their experience, previous iterations of AI got sidetracked, were easily confused, and had no meaningful memory. You can tell Cleverbot your name, but the program might forget within four inputs. Sometimes it forgets immediately. They wanted to find something with the ability to be self-referential. They needed something with the capacity for memory. The project began with the pair putting in the beginnings of scripts and letting them write the rest.
Calamity AI generated three variations of the script. In the 1st, Benny accuses Julia of being pregnant and not loving him and then stabs her in the stomach. In the 2nd, the dinner becomes a paranormal mystery when Benny disappears, leading Julia to search for him. In the 3rd version they ended up filming, Benny hypnotizes Julia and proceeds to dance on the table.
The AI is only really capable of making short scripts and it doesn't produce the most coherent work. According to Calamity AI, thinks GPT-3 technology has the potential to help in situations like writer's block, inspiring new ideas for people stuck without ideas for where to take their screenplays. The AI struggled to stay on track. The characters often reorient themselves to new, swinging emotions and live in a kind of heightened, melodramatic reality.
For all the technological advancements in natural language processing, interpretation still limits how much control the AI has over the finished product. Whatever the AI writes, there's still a limitation. A human has to interpret it. This is an award-winning short film. Calamity AI can probably train AI to produce a shot-list or even musical accompaniment. At the end of the day, however, the final product must be interpreted and crafted by a human.
