Odisha police have announced to deploy latest technologies including Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics and Mobile Computing to revamp analysis of criminal data. AI will produce a catalogue to support investigation team directing their investigation on right path.
Commenting on the development, Director General of Police R P Sharma said, "We will start using artificial intelligence from next year. The technology will guide investigating officers on procedures of investigation. If any officer commits any procedural mistake, AI will immediately issue an alert. It will help officers make a quick and accurate search of a particular crime's modus operandi, similarity between offences at different places and details about arrested persons from our digital database."
"We have made significant strides in the use of IT in 2018 and embarked on an ambitious road map to make Odisha Police one of the leading states in the use of IT in policing. The state government sanctioned Rs 139 crore to implement the road map in five years. Nearly Rs 21 crore has been provided during the current fiscal," he added.
Reportedly, Artificial Intelligence empowers an instant scan of police database and helps the team in identifying criminals through faces and photographs, previous criminal record or FIRs or exploring links of criminal gangs, scanning fingerprints and voice samples and identify the name of culprits involved in various illegitimate activities.
DGP Sharma also informed that he had set time limit of June 2019 for Superintendent of Odisha Police to completely instrument paperless initiative in police stations. Police Stations across the state had started digitizing FIRs, case files and other crime records since 2005. This plan of action is enforced to introduce transparency and accelerate work.
Sudhansu Sarangi, ADG of Odisha Police said that efforts were being made to improve the connectivity of all police stations. The officer is in charge of supervising the enforcement of the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) project.
Evolution in trial with technologies is the need of the hour. Every sector is required to match their pace with tech upgradation arising in the society. Handling crime investigation is a complex issue. The move will significantly help Odisha police to improve investigation and reduce crime rates by using advanced technologies.
