The tech giant, Google seems to be paying a five-figure sum to some news publications for posting AI-generated articles. Google is reportedly paying news publications to post AI-generated content to test and improve an unreleased AI model.
According to a report, Google has signed agreements with a handful of publishers for posting AI-generated content for a period of 12 months and in return paying a monthly sum for it. Google seems to be offering these publications tools to produce the content.
The publishers who have signed it need to compile a list of external websites that produce news and reports regularly that are relevant to their readership. According to the agreement, the publishers are required to publish three articles every day, one newsletter a week, and a marketing campaign every week.
The AI tool offered to publications by Google is a part of the Google News Initiative. The goal is to help small publications create aggregated content using data from sources such as government agencies and local news outlets, as stated by a report. Google also asked the publishers not to disclose that the articles are AI-generated.
The AI tool will enable the users to get an AI-generated news summary from external websites and then the news stories are supposed to be edited by a human editor.
However, According to sources, Google accepted that they are paying the publishing houses to post AI-generated content but refused that the AI tools will use information from other outlets.
Previously in 2016, Facebook also had an agreement with publishers for creating live video content. The social media platform paid millions of dollars to the publishers for using the live video feature which made headlines. As, a result many media outlets opted for it.
Moreover, this Google-led initiative will potentially help the journalists to perform their work.
