Brin has reportedly established a base inside a converted microkitchen at Google’s Gradient Canopy building in Mountain View, California. The space has become a working hub for Brin and a small group of leaders and engineers involved in Google’s AI push.
According to Business Insider, which cited eight current and former Google employees, Brin has been involved in discussions and decisions related to Gemini, including its development and the allocation of computing resources. He has also pushed for faster progress and a more startup-like approach to developing the model.
The setting is unusual for someone who helped build one of the world’s largest technology companies. But the arrangement reflects Brin’s return to technical work rather than a formal move back into Google’s executive structure.

Brin’s renewed involvement comes as Google faces intense competition in generative AI from companies including OpenAI and Anthropic.
Reuters reported in August that Brin had urged key AI staff to go all in on Gemini as Alphabet sought to close the gap with rivals. According to two people familiar with his remarks, Brin addressed hundreds of employees during an April town hall and urged Google DeepMind to move faster.
The push comes at a time when Google has been working to improve Gemini’s performance in areas such as coding and reasoning. Reuters reported that Google delayed a new flagship version of Gemini by two months after internal testing showed that its performance continued to lag behind rivals in some areas.
Brin has also reportedly shown particular interest in recursive self-improvement, or RSI, referring to the point at which AI systems could improve themselves. Business Insider reported that current and former employees described him as highly focused on the idea.

Brin’s increased involvement comes alongside a broader expansion of Google’s AI research.
Google DeepMind’s current research program includes work across generative AI, robotics, scientific discovery and other areas. Its recent research includes AlphaGenome Atlas, a high-resolution map of human DNA, WeatherNext 3 and Gemini Robotics. Google has also highlighted Gemini for Science and its Co-Scientist system as part of its efforts to use AI for scientific research.
Google has also continued expanding Gemini’s capabilities. At Google I/O 2026, the company said its work on factuality, multilinguality, and efficiency was improving Gemini’s performance. Google said Gemini had expanded to more than 70 languages across more than 230 countries, making it the company’s most widely available AI assistant.
Brin and fellow co-founder Larry Page launched Google out of a suburban Silicon Valley garage in 1998. Nearly three decades later, Brin is once again working closely with researchers and engineers, this time around the company’s AI ambitions.
While Brin does not have a formal executive role, his involvement gives him considerable influence over Google’s AI strategy, according to people familiar with the work. His return also comes after a major leadership reshuffle at Google DeepMind, which has further changed the structure of the company’s AI operations.
For Google, the challenge is no longer simply building powerful AI models. The company is competing with some of the world's biggest AI labs while trying to turn its research advances into products and services used by billions.
