Deep Learning Is a Blessing to Police for Crime Investigations
Published on

Investigations these days have many leads which in return helps the police officers navigate through the case very easily. This is a benefit as well as a negative point of conduct too. When there is too much of information available, it becomes very difficult to figure it out. Which information would be more helpful and which is just irrelevant has to be sorted out first before we begin with the case. Artificial intelligence is useful here and is an asset to be used for crime analysis. But a concept named deep learning has penetrated deep into the system which can be more helpful in crime analysis. Deep learning differs from artificial intelligence and is a part of a broader family of machine learning.

Deep learning architectures these days are applied to computer vision, speech recognition, machine translation, bioinformatics, drug design, crime inspections and various other fields. Deep learning uses deep neural networks based on which actions are triggered and have produced results comparable to human experts. When compared to traditional machine learning algorithms which are linear, deep learning algorithms are hierarchical. These are based on increasing complexity and abstraction. Now, these are helpful in police investigations in the way these processes available information.

The levels through which information would be passed keep on increasing step by step. This is what is termed as deep and hence the procedure is called deep learning. Each algorithm in the hierarchy will transform the input and use it as an acceptable asset for the next level. The output will be transformed each time until it reaches an accuracy level which is accepted. To reach this level, it requires access to the immense amount of training data. So the raw information feed into the software can be actively used to supplement the data demands for creating levels.

In the police investigations, deep learning helps through the video analysis. Videos gathered from multiple sources are feed into the deep learning systems. Through the software, we can identify and differentiate various targets appearing on the footage. The system is smart enough to identify objects such as a walking man (pedestrian), a bicycle, tall/short man, male/female human etc. It rigorously goes through the video until it spots the target. Once it is able to locate the target, it then searches for the same target in multiple clippings found from various other sources. In this way, it becomes easy to identify, locate and reach the guilty person.

Not only through the video analysis, but deep learning can also be helpful via Surveillance analysis. These days, this is more helpful and far more valuable than any other analysis. Having difficulty in finding lost children inside the huge malls is now easy using the deep learning systems. Once we need to show the child to the system and thereafter the system can look for the same in every new video feed available. Same as show it the last time we spotted the child and the rest is onto the system. Through these deep learning systems, security issues are solved in a far better way. Generating leads, collecting data and then dispatching it to higher authority is also easy. The entire system of police investigations is made more reliable and fast.

The very first time these were used in the Boston Marathon Bombing investigation. In this case, it was necessary to identify certain walking individuals among the videos and a thousand still images of moving people. Around the world, this technique is gaining popularity amongst the police officers. They are maintaining the complex systems, monitoring through them and then continuing with the investigation. These have come up as stones to step on while identifying crucial operations such as terrorist attacks or so. Deep learning systems are thus a savior for our generation and are helping close the investigation cases soon that too with accuracy.
