Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak, has warned that AI could make scams harder to spot

Steve Wozniak, a co-founder of Apple, has cautioned that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) may make detecting fraud and false information more difficult.

Mr. Wozniak said he is concerned that "bad actors" would use the technology.

In an interview with the BBC, he stated that regulations were required for the industry and that AI material should be explicitly identified.

The computer pioneer and Elon Musk co-signed a letter in March calling for a halt to creating the most potent AI models.

Mr. Wozniak, sometimes referred to as Woz in the tech industry, is a veteran of Silicon Valley who co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs and created the original Apple computer.

He says, "AI is so intelligent it's open to the bad players who want to trick you about who they are."

"AI" refers to computer systems capable of doing activities that ordinarily require human intelligence. This comprises computer programs that can recognize things in images and react to inquiries with human-like responses.

Because artificial intelligence lacks emotion, Mr. Wozniak doesn't think it will ever completely replace people. Still, he did issue a warning that, in his opinion, it will make bad actors even more convincing because tools like ChatGPT can produce language that "sounds so intelligent."

According to him, individuals who publish anything created by artificial intelligence should have accountability for it: "A human has to take responsibility for what is generated by AI."

He wants laws to keep large internet companies that "feel they can kind of get away with anything" accountable.

Although he seemed skeptical that regulators would get it right, he said, "I think the forces that drive for money usually win out, which is sort of sad."

Mr. Wozniak, a pioneer in computing, claims that wasted possibilities during the inception of the internet have lessons for contemporary AI designers. He holds that while "we can't stop the technology," we can teach individuals to recognize fraud and nefarious efforts to steal personal information.

Tim Cook, the current CEO of Apple, said to investors last week that it was crucial to handle AI "deliberately and thoughtfully" and that the company will "continue weaving it in our products on a very thoughtful basis."
