Artificial Intelligence: The Next Revolution in Smartphone Industry

With AI integration, phones can now make their own choices depending on the environment without having to configure them to do the same

Over the last decade, technological developments have contributed to phones becoming smarter with time. Even though artificial intelligence (AI) already provides multiple features on smartphones, such as security and virtual assistance, the number of smartphones with specialized AI chips is spreading quickly.

With AI integration, phones can now make their own choices depending on the environment without having to configure them to do the same. It guarantees lower latency with efficiency improvement and better protection when computations are performed remotely, as data is not transmitted over the Internet to the cloud. Personalization and an improved perception with augmented reality (AR) include other advantages.

According to Techhq, "Like how the recent iPhone 12 launch unpacked the tiny transistors and the AI advantages of Apple's new A14 Bionic chip – promising nearly 30% uptick in CPU, GPU, and AI-powered sensors performances – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is the chipmaker's first 5-nanometer chip."

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888

Qualcomm mentioned that, "During the annual Snapdragon Tech Summit Digital 2020, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. introduced its latest flagship Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 888 5G Mobile Platform, which will set the benchmark for flagship smartphones in 2021. This new platform packs industry-leading mobile innovations in 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), gaming, and camera technologies that will transform premium mobile devices into professional-quality cameras, intelligent personal assistants, and elite gaming rigs. Snapdragon 888 with advanced 5G connectivity will redefine today's mobile experiences to usher in the future of enterprise mobility, video telephony, console quality cloud gaming, and more."

Opportunities provided by AI Smartphones:

Camera

This is one of the main fields in which mobile manufacturers are functioning with regard to AI. Utilizing AI, the camera application of the phone can identify the subject (landscape, food, lightning, etc.) in the camera frame and change the settings for the best possible picture accordingly. Facial features can also be detected by AI and improved for a greater portrait automatically.

AI and ML in 'Alexa' and other virtual assistants

The smartphones of today have fundamental Virtual Assistant features that are steadily improving. Some speech recognition now provides a greater understanding than a human listener, even in crowded conditions. Over time, virtual assistants are likely to become a much greater part of our phone interface, and AI identifies the natural human language that you provide.

Facial Detection for security

AI is the one behind the face recognition that you might use to get into your smartphone, which uses pictures from the onboard cameras. Even if they wear or take off sunglasses, put on makeup, or grow beard, the AI and ML algorithms of the camera are able to recognize the face of their owner.

Individual Profiling

For behavioral and individual profiling, smartphones are able to analyze information. People can automatically obtain support and security, depending on the operation being done and the circumstances in which they are (e.g., home, transport, office, etc).

Intelligent Display

Adaptive illumination is another function that the AI offers. You don't need to manually configure the brightness of the screen as AI can do it for you automatically. It uses machine learning to learn from your own modifications and then customizes the brightness of the screen to the exact point that suits you, which also saves the battery in turn.
