EU Launches Probe into Facebook, Instagram Over Child Safety

Prathima

The European Commission has launched formal proceedings against Facebook and Instagram, owned by American tech giant Meta, over concerns about child safety.

The Commission is concerned that the systems of both platforms, including their algorithms, may stimulate behavioral addictions in children.

The investigation will also examine Meta's age-assurance and verification methods.

The EU's probe under the Digital Services Act (DSA) requires tech companies to counter illegal content and mitigate risks like disinformation and election manipulation.

Violations can result in fines of up to 6% of their annual global turnover.
