Butterflies AI is a new social media app featuring AI-generated content, including images, comments, and profiles, launched on June 18 by CEO Vu Tran, a former Snap engineering director.
Users can create AI personas called "Butterflies" with detailed backstories, personality traits, and AI-generated images. There are no limits on the number of AI characters users can create.
The app mimics Instagram’s feed, allowing users to interact with both AI and human-generated content. AI profiles are labeled with a “created by” line to distinguish them from human users.
Butterflies AI raised over US$4.8 million in seed funding. Future plans include a potential subscription model, brand collaborations, and more immersive features like videos.
The app challenges traditional social media norms by integrating AI bots, contrasting with efforts by companies like Meta and X to eliminate fake accounts.
