Quite simply, SSD DRAM assists in offloading the work done by the flash storage, thus increasing the performance rate of the device.

DRAM and DRAM-less SSDs

Not all SSDs have DRAM incorporated. Some affordable SSDs have been manufactured without the incorporated DRAM and are referred to as DRAM-less SSDs. These SSDs do not have DRAM, so they use some part of the main system memory (RAM) as a cache. This approach, however, is slower than DRAM. Therefore, if light-performance tasks are performed, DRAM-less SSDs are good and can be within range, but high-data applications or large bulk data movement may be challenging.

Why Is SSD DRAM Important?

Without SSD DRAM, an SSD would have to depend solely on NAND flash memory, which would be more time-consuming for data read operations. Reading and writing would become even slower than they already are since active data would have to be retrieved even from slow NAND flash. In contrast, SSD DRAM allows the SSD and its host system to use memories in non-magnifying modes’ cache.

A report from StorageReview shows that adding DRAM to an SSD can improve read and write performance by fifty percent. This is particularly important for high-processing tasks like gaming or video editing, where fast data access is crucial. 

With the increasing utilization of SSDs for personal and commercial purposes, the market has been flooded with better and faster storage devices. For example, by 2023, it was forecasted that more than 60% of consumer laptops and desktops possessed solid-state drivers, and many had integrated RAM for better performance. Since such tasks demand a lot of data within a short period, SSD DRAM ensures that the user gets quick and seamless access to their devices.
