Address poisoning is a misleading tactic used in cryptocurrency scams, as exemplified by the recent case where a trader lost $68 million in wrapped bitcoin (WBTC). In this scheme, the perpetrator mimicked the initial and final six characters of a legitimate wallet address, creating a convincing facade. Despite the apparent authenticity, the intermediary characters were altered. This discrepancy often goes unnoticed by the victim, who mistakenly sends funds to the fraudulent address. The scam's success hinges on exploiting human oversight and the reliance on familiar patterns. By replicating parts of a genuine address, the perpetrator aims to deceive the sender into believing they are transacting with the intended recipient. Once the funds are transferred, they become irretrievable, leaving the victim at a substantial financial loss.
