Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. reaching a globally important milestone in enhancing its artificial intelligence capabilities, specifically designed for the Indian market. SRI-B, the largest research center of Samsung outside of Korea, has developed a Hindi language model for Galaxy AI. This innovation gives an opportunity for Galaxy users in India to operate their devices in the native language that they are accustomed to, thus, optimizing the overall mobile user experience.
India is a linguistically diversified country; however, the major spoken language here is Hindi. With this understanding, Samsung always used to bring vernacular languages into its AI products. Integration of Galaxy AI with Hindi sets up an example of how it caters to the needs and preferences of Indian users.
Development of an accurate and comprehensive AI model in Hindi presented some challenges. The language comes with a range of dialects, variations that are tonal in nature, and frequent mixing of Hindi and English words. The SRI-B team adopted the following multi-pronged approach for the above:
Data Collection and Collaboration: This was to meet the huge demand for a great deal of segmented, annotated Hindi audio data consisting of conversational speech, individual words, and commands. The team worked with unanimously famous institutions like VIT to procure nearly a million lines of this kind of data. The necessity of a high-quality base is extremely important in training the AI model to pick up on the language subtleties.
Leveraging Translated and Transliterated Data: Team members have strategically used a mix of translated and transliterated data to improve the exposure of the model with respect to Hindi. The translated data were those wherein some existing commands in the English language had been translated into Hindi, while on the other hand, transliterated data represented Hindi words using the Roman alphabet phonetically. This enriched the model's learning process by adopting a combined approach between these two methods.
Native Linguists Expertise: It was truly enlightening to have native Hindi speakers on the development team. Their knowledge of the language made sure that the model could accurately understand the natural way one speaks in Hindi and respond appropriately to colloquialisms.
A wide array of advantages opens up to the user by integrating Hindi into the Galaxy AI. Now, with Hindi support, users can interact with their Galaxy devices through voice commands and questions, which will make for a much more natural and intuitive way of controlling smartphones.
Increased Accessibility: This development shall help those users who are more comfortable with Hindi to realize their full potential with Galaxy AI features, making the experience more inclusive and accessible.
Improved User Experience: It is easier and more convenient to navigate the phone, set reminders, look up information, and even control smart home devices.
The advent of Hindi within Galaxy AI is an unprecedented feat in the history of Samsung. The conglomerate is pledged to its commitment of continuing the addition of more languages in times ahead, thereby helping its across-the-board array of global users. Moreover, Samsung R&D Institute India has been contributing continuously to the development of more AI capabilities for Galaxy devices, including image and speech, natural language processing, and on-device machine learning.
