The popular Artificial Intelligence, OpenAI is slowly launching an advanced voice mode for ChatGPT to a limited number of subscribers of ChatGPT Plus.

In the latest tweet, the firm talked about how the new voice mode shows better improvements over ChatGPT’s current voice capabilities. At a recent event, OpenAI employees demonstrated an interrupt and requested different storytelling styles from the chatbot, which seamlessly adjusted its responses in real time.

The company stated, “Users in this alpha will receive an email with instructions and a message in their mobile app. We'll continue to add more people on a rolling basis and plan for everyone on Plus to have access in the fall. As previously mentioned, video and screen sharing capabilities will launch at a later date.”

OpenAI’s new voice assistant was first showcased at the GPT-4 launch event in May, but the feature faced excessive criticism for sounding like Scarlett Johansson. Johansson took legal action, and OpenAI dropped the voice.

This new voice assistant was formerly slated for a launch in late June. However, OpenAI delayed the release by a month  to enhance the detection functionality of the voice as well as eliminate inappropriate content, in order to ensure the feature met their quality standards.

OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson stated that the voice model was tested by more than 100 external red teamers, and experts who were looking for weaknesses in technology. This halt seems appropriate especially at a time when OpenAI’s safety policies are under constant scrutiny.

The spokesperson also added that the addition of new filters can recognize and block requests for generating music or other copyrighted audio.

Christianson mentioned that the new mode would use only four preset voices created with voice actors. Thus, stressing upon the fact that ChatGPT would not be able to ‘impersonate’ other people’s voices, whether individuals or public figures. The new voice assistant update will also block any outputs that get sidetracked from these preset voices.

OpenAI’s new voice assistant is expected to extend to all ChatGPT Plus users in the fall.

Apart from this update, OpenAI has been constantly striving for other AI features too, with the latest being its introduction of SearchGPT. SearchGPT is positioned as an improved search engine where users can interact with the search engine naturally and smoothly.

Even with its advanced NLP capabilities, accuracy, and contextual understanding, our review reveals that SearchGPT might have certain limitations especially when it comes to data bias. Nevertheless,  SearchGPT may use the more complex AI models for more accuracy and better understanding with its future updates.
