Reddit services seem to have resumed now after the relatively brief outage which lasted for an hour in the early hours of October 14, 2024.
Users from various parts of the world could not access the app, both through desktop and mobile apps. Although the site has resumed, Reddit has given no insights into the cause of this outage.
During the outage, several desktop users received a message stating, "No healthy upstream." On mobile apps, users reported encountering error notifications that said, "upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers. Reset reason: connection failure."
Reportedly many users expressed their frustration on social media platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) while waiting for updates from the company.
According to reports from DownDetector, more than 200 outage reports were filed during the outage. The company’s official webpage, redditstatus.com reported that ‘All the systems are operational.’
Since users still could not access the network, the company's status page did little to clarify the situation. There was another message that popped up on users’ desktops during the Reddit outage, ‘Our CDN could not reach our servers’. All these depicted scenarios of a full breakdown.
Reddit had its fair share of outages in recent times. The company faced outages both in September and August 2024, which the company termed as "degraded performance for Reddit." Each instance was resolved quickly so that normal functionality returned to the users.
Reliance Jio faced a similar outage recently due to a fire in its Mumbai headquarters. This prompted similar tweets like Reddit down on X and Facebook, saying Jio Down.
Reddit users remain optimistic regarding the hope of better communication by the company about the causes and prevention of future outages.
