People living in the state of Louisiana, USA, can now pay for state services using Bitcoin, Bitcoin Lightning, and USD Coin by employing private and secure crypto wallets, the state announced.
"Not only are we innovating but also offering our citizens flexibility and freedom in interacting with state services by introducing cryptocurrency as a payment method," said Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming.
Treasurer Fleming described this new shift saying that the state government will now accept cryptocurrency as a valid mode of payment, marking the full integration of digital currency in the public running of Louisiana. The first cryptocurrency payment was processed successfully by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries on Tuesday.
Even though they will be available to the residents to use, the state will not have any direct interest in them. A special service converts the incoming cryptocurrency transactions into US dollars. In this way, it will avoid getting any involvement with the complexities and the volatility of cryptocurrencies as well.
As per the announcement, "A unique service converts incoming cryptocurrency payments, depositing US dollar amounts into state government accounts like a credit or debit card transaction."
The Louisiana project collaborates with Bead Pay, a cryptocurrency payment specialist, and local partners, ensuring smooth operations.
"In this day and age, governments must change and move forward with technology," Fleming said. "This innovative solution safeguards our state from any risk associated with cryptocurrency."
The switch comes after Louisiana State Representative Mark Wright voiced support for the new payment options, stating, "Louisiana will continue to be a leader in accepting digital payments."
Another added element of the enhanced service experience that this transition brings into play for the department, especially sportsmen interacting with them, Secretary Madison Sheahan of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries also observes.
