The evolution of social media has fuelled modern trends in various industries. Social media platforms help us curate and nurture personal connections at scale. Today's social media platforms are occupied by users of all age groups. To expand the usage of these platforms, companies created applications that can be used on our smartphones. Social media provides like-minded people a platform to communicate, share their thoughts, ideas and help make a shift in the online community. However, social media platforms have also become the poison that has killed thousands of children and teenagers. Earlier, big tech companies handling these platforms have been lousy with their approach to fight against online crimes, hatred and bullying, but the growing number of tragedies due to online crimes have been on the rise since the past several years, which is why big tech companies have been developing several measures to moderate the content in social media platforms. Besides, teenagers and adults have become obssessed with social media. The fight over dominating these platforms and becoming the greatest social media influencer has now become a toxic cycle that knows no bounds.

To end this toxic cycle, big tech companies have launched alternative apps. These alternative apps for social media is aimed to help users detox themselves from the enigma of social media trends. However, its not just the social media craze that these applications aim to quell. Experts believe that alternative apps for social media can also solve several complex big tech problems.

So how are alternate apps aiding big tech companies?

There is a ton of controversy that surrounds platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Youtube. The controversy mostly deals with their algorithm or how their business model works. The amount of time that an average user spends on these applications is fragmented, however, the information is sold off to advertisers so that they can personalize the content that users view. This business model of big tech companies has emerged as one of the primary problems of social media companies. The optimization of the media content is said to be deteriorating the mental health of users that are addicted to social media.

The alternate social media apps are trying to solve this issue by designing a decentralized network structures, where instead of algorithms, the users' community will control the flow of the content on the platform. The content of these platforms are exposed to the users via other users or the communities that they are involved in.

Regulating social media and mitigating the damages done by these big tech companies might definitely solve a lot of issues that the industry is still unaware of, but it is definitely upto us to understand how we can use social media for the betterment of the society.
