Finally meeting user expectations, WhatsApp released a feature last year that allowed users to share HD files (up to 2GB in size) without any compression. It appears that the platform is now looking into even more methods to make cross-platform file sharing easier. 'Share files with people nearby' is one such service that is apparently in development. Like Android's "Nearby Share" feature, which necessitates user proximity, the feature will let users exchange files with those nearby.
WABetaInfo claims that WhatsApp beta users running Android 2.24.2.17 can now utilize the new file-sharing feature. The site has provided an image of the new function, which lets beta testers test out an innovative method of file sharing.
To send and receive files, users must travel to a new section to use this feature. The screenshot demonstrates that to share data and ensure safe sharing over short distances, both users must access this part. According to the report, swaying the gadget triggers a share request, thereby regulating file transfers. The functionality will notably also have end-to-end encryption, which guarantees that file transfers are safe even while not in a WhatsApp chat or on an unidentified network.
Although Apple has Airdrop and Android phones have "Near By" sharing features, WhatsApp's soon-to-be functionality may appeal to users because of its improved encryption and privacy features. This is especially important when transferring files in public areas because your phone number is concealed from anyone who isn't your contact. It's crucial to remember that this feature is still being worked on and might not be available for some time. It's also unclear when this feature will be added to the standard app version.
WhatsApp, in the meantime, has released some additional features for its Channels, enabling users to broadcast messages to a wide audience. Mark Zuckerberg revealed WhatsApp's new features last week. They include multiple admins, voice updates, polls, and share to status. The purpose of these features is to improve WhatsApp Channels user engagement.
After meeting user expectations with HD file sharing, WhatsApp explores further simplification with the upcoming "Share files with people nearby" feature, similar to Android's "Nearby Share."
