Top 10 Programming Languages and Their Funding Genies

These programming languages have companies and foundations for their financial support.

Funding in startups is a well-known thing, but it doesn't stop there. When new programming languages are developed, improving them from the initial stage, it requires financial support on behalf of the developers. Companies like Google, Jet Brains, and IBM are often seen to support and provide funding to programming languages that they find useful for their operations. On the other hand, there are also individual foundations that are solely made for the support of particular languages. Here are the top 10 programming languages that are funded by several companies and foundations.

Python

Python Software Foundation: The Python Software Foundation (PSF) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that holds the intellectual property rights behind the Python programming language. It manages the open-source licensing for Python version 2.1 and later and owns and protects the trademarks associated with Python. It also runs the North American PyCon conference annually, support other Python conferences around the world, and fund Python-related development with our grants program and by funding special projects.

C++

Standard C++ Foundation: The Standard C++ Foundation (Standard CPP Foundation in some databases that don't support + in names) is a Washington 501(c)(6) not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to support the C++ software developer community and promote the understanding and use of modern Standard C++ on all compilers and platforms. It does this by operating and funding isocpp.org, github.com/isocpp, and github.com/cplusplus repositories.

Java

Java Fund by KPCB: KPCB Java Fund is a liquidated private equity fund that was managed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers Partners. This attempt at investment began in 1996, however, it did not guarantee the interest necessary to win funding. The conversation quickly turned from technology to hardcore investment strategies, as people with money to invest aren't likely to be swayed by buzzwords thrown at them. It seemed that Java is certainly becoming an important area for investment, but it was not yet fully trusted. The last funding for Java done by KPCB was in 2019 and the amount was USD 600m.

Ruby

Ruby Association: The Ruby Association was founded to further the development of the programming language Ruby. The goals of the Ruby Association are to improve relationships between Ruby-related projects, communities, and businesses, and to address issues connected with using Ruby in an enterprise environment.

R

R Foundation: The R Foundation is a not-for-profit organization working in the public interest. It has been founded by the members of the R Development Core Team in order to provide support for the R project and other innovations in statistical computing. It believes that R has become a mature and valuable tool and it would like to ensure its continued development and the development of future innovations in software for statistical and computational research. This foundation aims to provide a reference point for individuals, institutions, or commercial enterprises that want to support or interact with the R development community. It also holds and administers the copyright of R software and documentation.

HTML

The UI Fund: Chrome supports the UI fund that grants people to work on developing HTML. In addition to funding, it also helps people find the right contacts and work with experienced specification editors.

CSS

The UI fund: Like HTML, The UI fund, operated by Chrome also provides grants to people working on CSS. This fund wants to recognize and help support this work and invest in the CSS ecosystem. It is willing to enable people to spend time on these projects and create more value for the web.

PHP

PHP foundation: In 2021, the members of the PHP community have announced the formation of a PHP foundation to continue the development of the language. In addition to them, the list of members includes Automattic, Laravel, Acquia, Zend, Craft CMS, Private Packagist, Tideways, PrestaShop, and Symfony. The PHP Foundation will be a non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure the long life and prosperity of the PHP language by funding part/full-time developers that contribute to the language. For faster operations. The foundation will be set up through Open Collective.

Kotlin

Kotlin Foundation: The Kotlin Foundation is a nonprofit nonstock corporation registered in the state of Delaware, USA. Its goal is to preserve the Kotlin Trademark, appoint the lead language designer, and control any kind of incompatible changes to the language. This foundation also receives support from companies like Google and Jet Brains.

Scratch

Scratch Foundation: The Scratch Foundation funds the projects and activities that make up Scratch, ScratchJr, and ScratchEd, including new technologies, communities, and learning resources. Its goal is to ensure that these projects and activities remain free for everyone, enabling schools and educational organizations worldwide to use Scratch as an entry point to help kids learn to express their creativity through coding.
