The announcement this week that Microsoft intends to give its Bing search engine ChatGPT-like features has propelled its accompanying mobile app into the top charts of the App Store as of Wednesday.
The Bing app has climbed to No. 12 among all free iPhone apps in the U.S. App Store, while Microsoft's Edge browser is now the No. 3 Utility app.
According to early projections from app intelligence company data.ai, the Bing app has experienced a 10x surge in new downloads globally.
The trend suggests there is a large market demand for these novel AI experiences, and users may even be prepared to experiment with alternative search engines and browsers to acquire access.
Although the new version of Bing has been officially released, it is now still in a limited preview.
Users must first sign up for a waitlist if they want to test out the new AI features.
Microsoft stated that over the next weeks, "millions" of individuals will be invited from the waitlist.
The business cleverly devised a mechanism to advance on its queue in the interim.
Microsoft proposes on a landing page that customers take a few extra steps in order to reach the new Bing more quickly.
On their PC, they can do this by making Microsoft's search the default, and on their smartphone, they can do this by scanning a QR code to download the Microsoft Bing App.
It's also possible that some of the new Bing app customers think the mobile app will provide them access to the AI functions.
To be clear, it isn't the situation right now.
Additionally, despite the fact that the app was just upgraded, Microsoft provides no guarantees that using AI from this native iOS experience will be possible.
Some customers may have also downloaded Microsoft's Edge browser for their iPhone in addition to Bing, as suggested by Microsoft's website.
The Edge app is currently No. 3 on the Utilities Top Charts in the U.S. App Store, up from its previous position of No. 7 on Monday, despite not climbing the charts as swiftly as Bing.
