iPhone 15 Displays Enter Mass Production, Periscope Camera Yield Low

Apple's upcoming iPhone 15 series is expected to debut in the coming weeks, and according to a new report, its display supplier Samsung has already started mass producing the OLED panels for the new smartphones. The report also claims that the production yield of the periscope camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max is below Apple's expectations.

Samsung Display Gets Approval from Apple

According to The Elec, a South Korean publication, Samsung Display has received approval from Apple to manufacture four different OLED panels for the iPhone 15 lineup. Samsung Display is the main supplier of OLED panels for Apple, and it will produce the displays for all four models: the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The report says that Samsung Display has begun mass production of the panels, which means the iPhone 15 launch is on track for September. Unlike last year, when the iPhone 14 series was delayed due to the pandemic, Apple is expected to announce and release the iPhone 15 series in its usual timeframe.

iPhone 15 Series to Feature Dynamic Island

The report also reveals some details about the display features of the iPhone 15 series. It says that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will also feature the Dynamic Island this year, which was previously exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro models. Dynamic Island is a special type of OLED panel that allows for a higher refresh rate and lower power consumption.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will also feature the Dynamic Island but with thinner bezels than before. However, the resolution and refresh rate of the displays are expected to stay the same. The report also mentions that LG Display, another supplier of OLED panels for Apple, has received conditional approval from Apple and needs to make some improvements before it can start mass production.

Periscope Camera Yield Below Expectations

Another interesting tidbit from the report is that the production yield of the periscope camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max is below Apple's expectations. The periscope camera is rumored to be a new iPhone 15 Pro Max feature that will offer up to 10x optical zoom, surpassing the current 2.5x zoom on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The report says that LG Innotek, which supplies the zoom components, and Sony, which supplies the image sensors, need help meeting Apple's quality standards. It is still being determined if this will affect the availability or performance of the periscope camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Other Rumored Features of the iPhone 15 Series

Apart from the display and camera features, the iPhone 15 series is also expected to come with a faster A16 chip based on a 3nm process, an Action button that will replace the mute switch reworked internals that will make them more repairable, and titanium edges instead of stainless steel for improved durability.

The iPhone 15 series is likely to be unveiled in early September, along with other products such as the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. The prices and storage options of the new iPhones are not known yet, but they are expected to be similar to those of the iPhone 14 series.
