Infosys Handles Moonlighting with Compassion: Help with Gig Work

Satavisa Pati

Infosys once again proves to be a great working space for its employees.

The IT giant Infosys has become the first company to endorse its workers taking on freelance employment openly. The company's decision to recognize and permit gig work is a step in the right direction and might create a precedent. It comes as a bigger discussion about moonlighting and employee rights continuing to boil in the information technology (IT) industry and other white-collar job sectors.

According to an internal email, "any employee, who desires to take up gig work, may do so, with the prior agreement of their manager and BP-HR," as long as the work is done outside of regular business hours and does not compete with Infosys or Infosys' clients. The communication makes no reference to "moonlighting," which is still illegal since it suggests doing two jobs at once. Instead, the email provides employees with instructions that will aid them in engaging in outside activities that do not violate their employment agreement.

We trust our staff to keep this from interfering with their productive work with Infosys. The email went on to say, "working in areas where there is a possible conflict of interest or by accepting second employment is prohibited by Infosys' employment contract." As a company, Infosys places a premium on employees' willingness to learn, encouraging them to take on extra responsibilities.

It stressed again that workers must be cautious to avoid interfering with their regular duties at Infosys by taking on side projects that don't "comply with the company's policy for gig working, and do not break client contracts." The report said that employees might resolve many of these concerns by consulting with their supervisors before beginning such tasks.

The firm also claims to have opened up internal gig work options via its Accelerate platform, which allows managers to post available gig work positions for workers to apply to. CEO Salil Parekh has stated that out of every quarter's 4,000 applicants, only 600 are chosen.

The corporation has also assured its numerous workers that, based on performance, they will receive a wage increase of 10-13%. It has been reported that the salaries of some of the most productive employees have increased by 25%. When India's most important holiday approaches, a pay increase will spread joy throughout Infosys. However, the Increment varied by employee grade, with higher-paid executives receiving smaller increases
