How 5G Promises to Open a World of Disruption and Opportunities

Market Trends

"5G is 10 times faster, supports 10,000 times more network traffic and can handle 100 times more devices than 4G networks while enabling one-fiftieth the latency with zero perceived downtime."

One of the most transformative technologies to emerge in the history of the telecommunications industry, 5G, with its high speed and dramatically expanded capacity, promises to shape how we communicate, live, and work in new, unimaginable ways. In combination with other advanced technologies, 5G is set to play a lead role in the future of communications.

Let's see what combinations of next-gen tech may emerge and which fields are likely to benefit.

Boosting cellular wireless technology

According to a recent estimate, the number of 5G users worldwide is expected to explode, going from less than 200 million in 2019 to 1,02 billion in 2023. The projected low latency, high speed, reliability, and flexibility of 5G will substantially improve enterprise ability to use wireless cellular communications for the purposes of improved broadband, IoT, and other mobility applications. Another report goes on to predict that 5G will continue on its growth path thereon to reach a whopping 3.5 billion subscriptions by 2026. This will account for more than 50 percent of mobile data traffic at the time,making5G the fastest generation of wireless technology ever to be rolled out on a global scale.

Empowering edge computing

Another technology that 5G will synergize with for powerful results is edge computing. Together, they will empower the processing of vast volumes of data in real-time, with the lowest possible latency, and increasingly decentralized settings. This will be in stark contrast to how cloud computing resources started out: in essentially centralized settings. With the arrival of 5G, cloud users will get the benefits of simplified data storage and data access. Currently, organizations are faced with a dilemma where computation needs to be performed in real-time, but the sheer volume of data cannot be transported in real-time, leading to the delay in decision making while using cloud architecture. This is where edge computing, boosted by 5G, will become vital. With edge computing, developers can create applications powered by 5G that do not even exist today.

Global research firm IDC predicts that the worldwide edge computing market will reach about USD250 billion by 2024. Spurring this trend and playing a catalyst's role for this growth will be 5G technology.

Accelerating the adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT)

According to reports, 5G will be about 10 times or even faster than existing LTE networks. The increase in speeds will enable IoT devices across settings to communicate and share data faster than ever before. Apart from smart home devices, IoT devices, including those deployed in healthcare and industry applications, will be able to transmit critical data quickly, providing real-time insights and business value.

Further, organizations will be able to scale up the number of devices that can be hooked up to 5G networks. This will improve the quality of life, inside and outside the home, save costs and generate more income in the long run.

Expanding the scope of Artificial Intelligence

This brings us to AI. 5G promises to integrate with AIin two crucial ways. First, by supporting and empowering AI-based tools and applications to generate and analyze data in interconnected devices. Second, by leveraging AI's unique strengths in helping run and manage large, complex networks without losing data.

According to a recent report, the global IoT devices market is anticipated to reach around USD 291 billion by 2027. As the number of IoT devices deployed globally continues to grow every day, AI and 5G can be combined to maximize IoT revenue.  With applied AI, segmentation of consumer/IoT traffic and leveraging signaling and usage analytics will provide insights into roaming traffic patterns. This will play a role in helping uncover and isolate any abnormal activity.

With 5G, communication service providers will also gain new business opportunities through service differentiation to different IoT segments, such as massive, critical IoT, or specific enterprise IoT, enabling them to move up the value chain.

Mainstreaming augmented/virtual reality

5G will also accelerate the availability of faster, lighter, and more immersive VR technology through smartphones that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Aside from entertainment, knowledge transfer, especially in the business world will be made more seamless and quicker.

Digitalization was gathering speed before 2020 but it picked up greater momentum over the past year, thanks to the pandemic. In this context, 5G looks set to enable organizations to improve efficiency and customer service while addressing existing challenges seamlessly and effectively. Data growth is inevitable with the implementation of 5G technology, so organizations should prepare in advance to store, manage and analyze copious amounts of data
