Hydraulic Atlas Humanoid Robot Retires its Renowned Hydraulic Atlas Humanoid Robot

Boston Dynamics bids farewell to Hydraulic Atlas Humanoid Robot which is recognized for its ability for athletic and is considered to be a pioneer in the field of bipedal robots. This was a significant move in the robotics industry. A video surfaced online that showcased this significant move.

According to a statement by a Former DARPA Program Manager, it was one of the most advanced humanoid robots when it was launched but was a physical shell basically for the software brains and nerves developed by the teams.

Hydraulic Atlas Humanoid Robot was developed by Boston Dynamics in collaboration with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) in 2009. In the course of years, the robot went through several revisions with iterations that showcased vital advancements in maneuverability, balance, and agility. This led to the robot to overcome the challenges of the robotic industry.

Atlas' reason for retirement has not been particularly revealed by Boston Dynamics as the company has been focusing on commercialization. The appointment of the second CEO, Rob Playter of Hyundai 2021 acquisition of the firm.

Notably, Boston Dynamics is giving more importance to robots that have commercial potential than the ones intended to be designed for athletic performance. Atlas' retirement indicates the end of the humanoid robotics era. Atlas has some impressive advancements in locomotion in terms of hydraulics that have become outdated as per the robotics standards.

Furthermore, Earlier, in July last year bipedal robot completed 10 years since its debut in the robotic industry. Comparing Atlas to a human infant, the former Program Manager of DARPA said that an infant aged 1 year can barely walk and cannot balance so it falls so if you see these machines can be compared to science fiction.

The video is captioned as the humanoid robot will be updated for performing real work with the combination of mobility, strength, and perception. The video showed some cool augmented reality perception tricks and a new grasper that is particularly prepared for work. The video also indicated some of the top hits of Atlas' and some defects of the robot.

Moreover, even if the robot is retired, the legacy of Atlas' will continue to live on. The innovative design of Atlas' design has inspired many roboticists and engineers. Moving ahead, these unconventional designs and capabilities will shape the future of humanoid robots across various industries.
