Android 14 might introduce satellite SMS support similar to the iPhone

According to recent speculations, Google's forthcoming Android 14 operating system may have satellite SMS messaging functionality, allowing users to send and receive messages without cellular connectivity. While Google has yet to confirm this feature, including satellite SMS capability in the forthcoming version might be a significant improvement, increasing Android's capabilities compared to its competitors.

Those frequently travel to remote locations where network service may be limited or wander into rural areas would benefit most from satellite SMS support. Furthermore, the capability may allow consumers to communicate with loved ones and colleagues even when no network service is available.

However, adding satellite functionality to mobile devices is problematic since most smartphones need more built-in technology for satellite communication. If the rumors are genuine, watching how Google approaches introducing this capability to its Android operating system will be interesting.

Apple already has a satellite communication function that allows iPhone users to send emergency messages to first responders or other iPhone users even with no cell network coverage. Users who frequently venture into rural or otherwise difficult regions where network connection is low or non-existent have complimented this addition.

The addition of satellite SMS capability in Android 14 could have a significant impact on the whole market, as it would increase Android's capabilities and improve the user experience. Android users would not be restricted by their handsets' lack of satellite gear, which means they would be able to communicate with others regardless of their location. Android 14 is rumored to have, in addition to satellite SMS compatibility, a new user interface with greater customization possibilities than prior versions. These changes are likely to be announced later this year when Google launches updated versions of Android in the autumn.
