How Big Data Is Changing Construction Industry

Market Trends

There are four general areas in construction which big data is already significantly improving: tracking and management, budgeting, reducing risks, and decision-making processes. Construction projects are always followed by a lot of data. That data was usually unstructured, siloed and collected on paper. However, with a better understanding of big data, construction companies are welcoming its implementation in the industry due to numerous benefits.

With today's technology, construction companies can easily capture data through various devices and make their processes more efficient and simplified. On the other hand, many companies find big data a bit overwhelming when trying to structure and analyze their data. But, the outcome is undoubtedly positive for everyone involved – improved decision-making process, increased productivity, improved jobsite safety and reduced serious risks.

Due to such technologies, these companies can even use their previous data to predict the future and focus only on projects that have higher chances of success. All of this leads to big data becoming the most trending tool in the construction industry. The only challenge is whether these businesses will be able to adapt to these rapid changes or will some of them be left behind.

Optimising processes

Without the constant optimisation of various processes, construction companies will not be able to stay competitive in this market. Big data does help them to be more productive, faster and automatic by keeping track from the first to the last step of each process. With a high-quality analysis that big data provides, companies can better understand where the improvements are needed and find the best ways to implement them. Not to mention that one of the primary goals of every optimization is to reduce costs which are mostly coming from unplanned downtime. Luckily, big data significantly reduces the downtime and, consequently, companies are not facing much lower unpredictable costs.

Improving worker productivity

Usually, when we are talking about productivity in construction, it is mostly focused on the machines and technology which directly impact the speed of the process. However, there is one more crucial factor in this equation – human. Big data improves your workers' productivity as it is easier to track them and their work progress. Being able to check the working status of your employees at any time increases their productivity and saves time. Moreover, when there is enough data, companies can even analyze how workers interact with the site to find room for improvement by replacing tools and materials.

Sharing data

There is so much data on construction projects that require a certain level of organization to handle this information properly. Among many things, companies need to share their data more frequently with other stakeholders. Also, they need to find effective ways to centralize and structure this data which will make it easier to access them and, of course, understand them. Eventually, these companies will need to eliminate data silos if they wish to enjoy the full potential of a powerful technology like this one. One of the biggest axioms when talking about big data is the interoperability between used software solutions and tools. Without interoperability, it will be almost impossible to share such vital data even internally.

Conclusion

Big data will continue to have a positive effect on the whole construction industry and it will become more readily available. However, companies will need to learn how to adapt to this technology if they wish to enjoy these enormous benefits. From helping to determine which are the most profitable projects to managing and improving processes, big data is unquestionably the most trending tool for these companies and it is here to stay.
