Hyperautomation Can be a Catalyst to IoB Data Security

How hyperautomation can ensure the security of the internet of behavior data?

Hyperautomation is a trending technology that brings together components of process automation. As a powerful set of digital technologies such as AI, machine learning and RPA, hyperautomation automates tasks that are complex to humans. It can be thought of as a crucial solution for the Internet of Behaviour (IoB), Gartner's top strategic technology trend for 2021. IoB extends from the Internet of Things (IoT), the interconnection of devices that result in a variety of new data sources. As it is focused on connecting people and their behavior, Gartner predicts that IoB will become prevalent and over 3 billion people globally will come under its influence by 2023.

Understanding Internet of Behaviour (IoB)

The internet of behaviour is all about utilizing data to influence behaviours. It gathers data from a number of data sources. Companies collect data through their apps that are provided by customers. But more often, they gather non-customer information by sharing across connected devices. Every technology-powered device we use today can act as a gateway for data collection. A smartphone, for instance, can track a person's online movements as well as their real-life geographic position. And thereafter, it is not intricate for companies to link the smartphone with laptops, desktops, in-home devices like voice assistants, house or car cameras, and even cell phone records.

These data or information could pose greater risks because "When there is more data, there is inherently more risk". As the internet of behaviour gathers, combines and processes data from various sources, it could allow cybercriminals to access sensitive information that divulges consumer behavior patterns. In this regard, organizations must collect only those data or information that fulfill their needs. Data understanding and classification exercise can improve data security practice for an organization. According to a Forbes article, exercise for professionals responsible for security operations or data security within an organization should look like:

  • Ask yourself or your team: Do you need the information to accomplish the business objective?
  • If you're bringing in the data, you must classify it by type: from a regulatory and compliance perspective, and controls and procedures to store and use the data.
  • If you determine you need the data, you should then ask: How are you using the information?

Businesses also must consider risk mitigation and frequency related to the data they are bringing in. They need to build protocols for reconsideration of their risk over time. This is where they can harness the power of hyperautomation. Hyperautomation intensifies the ability to automate work. Organizations that apply a hyperautomation approach to their security and IT operations, including SecOps, ITOps and DevOps, can create robust security, compliance and business processes and execute on those processes automatically.

According to Gartner, innovation leaders need to begin delivering end-to-end automation beyond RPA, combining ancillary technologies in a process that is referred to as hyperautomation. So, as hyperautomation can offer easier scalability, tighter integration of technologies across legacy systems and improved ROI, it can be constructive in mitigating the risk of exposing personally identifiable information or individual behavioural data.
