Intro: Deep Learning is a Machine learning technique that employs neural networks to perform complex computations on massive amounts of data. It gained popularity mainly in scientific computing and its algorithm are widely used in industries. To perform complex tasks, deep learning algorithms employ different types of neural networks.

With rapid advancements, deep learning algorithms teach machines by using examples to train them. Neural networks, a method in AI teaches computers to process data like a human brain. It uses interconnected nodes in a layered structure that resembles the human brain. In the data revolution era, the deep learning algorithm can automatically learn intricate features from complex and unstructured data, whereas traditional machine learning algorithms require manual features. Additionally, deep learning can handle large datasets, learns and improves with more data, and outperforms traditional ML in certain tasks. So let's discuss the top 10 Deep learning algorithms that you should know in 2023:

1. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs)

CNNs used in computer vision applications consist of multiple layers for performing operations like pooling, convolution, and activation. They have multiple layers to perform these operations namely the Convolution layer, Rectified Linear Unit, and Pooling layer. Developed in 1988, it was initially used for recognizing characters like digits and ZIP codes. Other applications include object detection, segmentation, and image recognition.

2. Transformer Networks

Transformer Networks transform computer vision and NLP applications such as machine translation and text generation. They gained popularity in analyzing data which makes it quicker. They perform in a variety of NLP applications including machine translation, sentiment analysis, and text categorization. Computer vision applications include object recognition and image captioning.

3. Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTMs)

LSTMs are built to handle long-term dependencies and sequential input. They have memory cells that can store information from a long time ago while also forgetting unnecessary information. LSTMs operate through gates that control the flow of information. It is typically used for speech recognition, music composition, and pharmaceutical development.

4. Autoencoders

Autoencoders are neural networks utilized for unsupervised learning tasks. An autoencoder consists of three main components namely the encoder, the code, and the decoder. The encoder maps the input to a lower dimensional space whereas the decoder reconstructs the original input from the encoded representation. They are used for purposes such as image processing, popularity prediction, anomaly detection, and data compression.

5. Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs)

SOMs are artificial neural network that learns and represent complex data and enables data visualization to reduce the dimensions of data. Data visualizations solve problems that humans cannot easily visualize high-dimensional data. They were introduced by Finnish professor Teuvo Kohonen in the early 1980s and were also called Kohonen Maps.

6. Deep Reinforcement Learning

Deep Reinforcement learning is a type of machine learning in which an agent interacts with its surroundings and learns via trial and error. He is trained to make decisions based on reward systems and the goal is to maximize the cumulative reward. Q-learning and Deep Q-networks are well-known deep Reinforcement learning methods. It is used in applications like robotics, gaming, and autonomous driving.

7. Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs)

Recurrent neural networks are capable of processing sequential data, ideal for speech recognition language modeling and also forecasting. They work using a feedback loop that allows them to store and process information from previous tasks. RNNs are used in a wide range of applications like NLP, speech recognition, etc.

8. Capsule Networks

Capsule networks are a type of neural network that can effectively identify data patterns and correlations. The main aim of this network is to overcome the limitations of the above-discussed convolutional neural networks. They consist of neuron groups called capsules that represent different parts of the object. Their applications include object identification, picture segmentation, and NLP.

9. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs)

GANs can generate new data that exactly resemble the original. They consist of two parts- a generator and a discriminator. The function of the generator is to produce new data comparable to the original or fake samples whereas the discriminator differentiates them from the real ones. GANs' use cases include producing realistic images, generating videos, and also style transfer.

10. Radical Basis Function Networks (RBFNs)

RBFNs developed in 1988 are used for function approximation and pattern recognition tasks. They consist of three layers including an input layer, a hidden layer, and an output layer. Their advantages are they require fewer training data and they are less sensitive to the choice of hyperparameters and initialization. The various applications include speech recognition, image processing, and control systems.
